Description: CBD Gallery has commenced its Weekly 'BLAC Friday' Exhibition Openings for 2008. Featuring New Work from our 7 Residential Artists Every Friday From 7PM, Located Above 'Govindas', 99 Elizabeth St.
This year we are launching our new Group 'B.L.A.C.' 'Brisbane Local Arts Collective'.
We’ve reformatted not on the appearance and structure of the venue, but have also restructured our operations. We now cater for a more manageable stable of 7 artists, and are running weekly openings every Friday for the fresh work we are all producing.
I think our greatest point of difference is that we are operating in such a way as to facilitate constant production, constant display, and constant sale for all of our artists. This point alone makes us unique in Brisbane. As you are aware our arts industry is built around occasional, production, occasional exhibition, and occasional sale. Three factors in why it has become so difficult for practicing visual artists to actually practice their craft in a 40 hr a week fashion, it really is only a viable option for 5% of artists in our society :/
Other interesting aspects that might appeal is our Artist Run Initiative status; we are all artists and run the place ourselves in fact we have never received any Government or funding assistance. We charge NO commission on the sale of artwork, making it both affordable for the public and profitable for the artists.
We have also invested heavily into our local underground arts culture having shown over 200 artists work since our inception, and shown 1,000's of works to 1,000's of locals. Being an experimental venture, we have operated all forms of cross genre events here in tandem with our exhibitions, from arts auctions, to live bands, burlesque shows, themed and fancy dress nights, movie nights as well as fashion reviews, workshops, art classes, life-drawing classes, fundraisers for local groups like 4zzz, and Foe. Filming student documentaries, Facilitating Video clip for local band 'The Kidney Thieves, at our venue, School tour groups, Stage Performances on Roma St, Queen St Mall, Valley Mall, we really have tried everything we could think of to manifest a viable alternative venue/community for the production, display and sale of local cultural product.
All these are in addition to our regular shows, reaching an attendance at times of over 400 public per show, all artist run, harnessing the human resources of the local artist population, which also doubled as training and mentorship for the many young artists involved for whom CBD Gallery has been their first foray into their local arts Industry.
As well as events we have run on site at our venue we have been very active in the local area running arts stalls for our artists in King George Square, Life drawing classes at the Fringe bar in the Valley, Regular exhibitions at the Fringe also, and also recently working with local band 'The Red Paintings, making props for their national tour last year, as well as all the props, stage design, and storey-boarding for their Event at the Tivoli in December. The Red Paintings have now been awarded support for AQ and are traveling to America in April to make their fortune on the music circuit there representing Queensland and Australia.
