A Midsummer Night's Dream

This event has now passed

Needing a new opera for the 1960 Aldeburgh Festival at relatively short notice, Britten had no time to go through the long and tedious process of working with a librettist. He therefore seized upon already existing text that also happened to be one of his favourite Shakespearean plays. Peter Pears adapted the libretto reducing the original by almost half yet skilfully retaining the magical essence the joyfulness and good nature of Shakespeares play but through his enchanting vocal and instrumental writing draws detailed characterisation from every role from the haughty Oberon to the bumbling Bottom.
