The Lyric Theatre is a venue of world class proportions. With continental-style seating for 2 000 patrons, the Lyric is designed primarily for opera, ballet and theatre. Flexible and multi-purpose, it offers six different modes for a wide range of productions. The theatre has been designed in a traditional horseshoe shape, producing excellent acoustics.
The seating consists of a stalls level of 1 000 seats and two balconies of 500 seats each. The soft rose decor, combined with Queensland walnut veneer panelling, gives a feeling of solidarity and warmth to the interior. The Lyric opened with The Pirates of Penzance starring Jon English on February 7, 1985 followed by a long and successful season. Since then, the theatre has rarely been empty, with artists from the world’s greatest ballet, opera and theatre companies performing to enthusiastic audiences.
