Paniyiri, Queensland’s signature celebration of all things Greek and Queensland’s largest cultural festival, prepares to deliver Hellenic hospitality at its best over the weekend of May 23 & 24, 2009 at Musgrave Park and The Greek Club & Convention Centre in South Brisbane.
While the historic steps of the Acropolis may be some 15,000km from the grassy flats of Brisbane’s Musgrave Park, all the sights, sounds and tastes from the country which produced Homer and Haloumi; Bouzouki and Baklava and Effie and Eliopita will be celebrated in style during the much anticipated, and much loved festival.

The Paniyiri Main Stage in Musgrave Park will host almost 20 hours of entertainment over the weekend including the return of So You Think You Can Dance Greek, appearances from Greek Goddess Effie, Grape Stomping, Olive and Honeypuff Eating Competitions, Hellenic Dancing, Zorba Till You Drop and Fireworks. In Musgrave Park more than 30 food stalls will showcase the tastes, recipes and secrets of food from all corners of Greece while in The Greek Club, a full program of Cooking Demonstrations and Lectures will take place. This year Paniyiri will also join in the festivities of Queensland’s 150th Anniversary (Q150) by celebrating the significant role the Greek culture and iconic Greek identities like Countess Lady Diamantina Roma Bowen have played in the city’s development.

Now facing its 33rd successful year, Paniyiri is a community initiative of the 25,000-strong Greek community of South East Queensland but also the general community in a celebration of fun, food and friendship. The festival is a testament to Greece, proving that it really is a destination where tradition holds firm and where hospitality and living life to the fullest is everything. Funds raised by the Paniyiri Greek Festival are channeled back into the community via the Greek Orthodox Community of St George, Brisbane’s oldest Greek community established in Queensland in the 1920s.
