The Visitor
Thursday August 7 at 6:50pm
Experience a physical and musical adventure with an African Drum performance and display in the foyer from 6pm from authentic African musicians “African Connection”. A soulful drama of cross-cultural understanding and inner-resurrection from Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent). Widowed college professor Walter (Richard Jenkins) returns to his seldom used New York apartment to discover two illegal immigrants, Tarek and his partner Zainab, living inside. Walter and Tarek slowly develop a close bond. Tarek, a talented musician, insists on teaching the aging academic to play the African drum. The instrument’s exuberant rhythms revitalize Walter’s faltering spirit and as the friendship between the two men deepens, the differences in culture, age and temperament fall away.
Three Blind Mice
Saturday August 9 at 8:50pm
Join us at HMAS Palace Centro for a maiden screening of Three Blind Mice and a Panama cocktail at the bar. Three young naval officers hit the shore for a brief stopover in Sydney before shipping off to the Middle East. Harry (Matthew Newton) is keen to drink and sleep his way to sunrise while the seemingly upright Dean (Toby Schmitz) wants to see his fiancée as another long stretch on the open water beckons. As for Sam (Ewen Leslie), there’s a dark desperation lurking inside him—it’s clear that going AWOL is seriously on his mind. As the night drags on, tensions between the three come to a boil and horrible secrets that throw each man’s future into question are revealed.
Public Enemy: Welcome to the Terrordome
Sunday August 10 at 7:30pm
Join DJ Capital from 6.45pm who’ll be scratching and spinning some of Public Enemy’s greatest tracks and hip hop of the 90’s. In 1987 Public Enemy emerged as one of the most formidable forces in rap music with the release of their landmark sophomore album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back; nearly 20 years later, Chuck D and the crew still have what it takes to get their powerful message across while whipping the crowd into an absolute frenzy. On the heels of Public Enemy’s 2007 release How You Sell Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul, a wide variety of musical artists including Henry Rollins, Jonathan Davis, Tom Morello, Talib Kweli, and the Beastie Boys come together in order to reflect on the power of a group whose influence continues to be felt even as they move forward to blaze new trails.
