Queensland Ballet's lavish new production of Swan Lake is inspired by the autobiography of ballerina Mathilde Kschessinska. Exiled in France after the Russian Revolution, she wrote an account of her life at The Imperial Ballet and her romance with Tsar Nicholas II. In their tragic story, choreographer François Klaus has found parallels with the ill-fated love of the Swan Queen and Prince Siegfried.

Kschessinska's love for Nicholas endured through many years, but as the dark forces of intrigue and destruction grew around them, he eventually met his grim fate, while she fled to Paris, where she helped to nurture the great Russian ballet tradition in the West.

With the glorious music of Tchaikovsky performed by The Queensland Orchestra, this unique production of Swan Lake pays homage to its rich choreographic heritage, and chronicles an epic story of devotion and betrayal.
