This program traverses several centuries, countries and styles. From a short baroque symphony by English composer William Boyce , to the dazzling clarinet concerto by his twentieth century compatriot Gerald Finzi, performed by student soloist Claire Tomlin, this program also features works from eastern Europe and Japan. The contemporary composer Yoshimatsu (born 1953) incorporates classical idioms and influences from popular music in his orchestral works, as well as impressionistic touches such as in these two works from the 1990s - White Landscapes, inspired by snow scenes paintings by the artist Tomiaka, and the atmospheric Dream Coloured Mobile II. As both a foil and a finale to this diverse program, we feature the rousing Czech Suite by Dvorak, which cleverly combines dance rhythms from from his homeland with the exuberance of the late Romantic orchestral style.
