Melbourne-based photographer Nikki Toole makes photographic portraits of skateboarders from around the world. Many skaters speak of a solitary, focused mind space while skating. Toole’s subjects often retain the intense look that is the result of being ‘in the zone’ with their sport and she sets out to capture that in the portrait-making process.
Toole’s approach is an anthropological one and her highly-focused portrait project explores contemporary identity through photographic portraiture. Her subjects are photographed exclusively in their own environments as she investigates the forces of identity that define them.
