COURTHOUSE ARTS, in partnership with GEELONG REPERTORY THEATRE present:

SAND
Directed by Peter Wills & David Ward

It was over fourteen months ago that 19-year-old performer David Ward began writing his first full-length play; a tense and touching psychological drama and a reimagining of the Greek-tragedy, dealing with the lengths that humans will go to in order to survive, to be accepted and to find a place to call home.

And now Courthouse Arts are very proud to present Sand, a striking and unforgettable new work from an exciting new artist, and to be part of an initiative to support the growth and development of young and emerging artists. Artistic Director of Courthouse Arts, Ben Laden, is excited to see that Sand has grown from most humble beginnings in the Mentorship Program of 2009.

“David is an accomplished actor/writer, and this production of Sand is the perfect end product to Courthouse Arts’ drive to support the work of young artists.”

David has been involved with Courthouse Arts for two years. After appearing in and winning the Geelong heats of Fast & Fresh in 2008, David went on win the Best Actor award at Fast & Fresh Melbourne later that year with his 10-minute monologue Jekyll & Hyde. He has since appeared in the Short Circuit Theatre series and Master and Servant with Courthouse Arts and West Side Story for Footlight Productions.
Sand is a new and edgy piece of theatre that charts the story of Earl, Raymond and Kevin – three total strangers from different walks of life – who find themselves stranded on a desert island; baren and uninhabitable. No food, no shelter and no provisions; just the clothes on their backs and each other.
Who will crack first? Who will survive? What depths will they sink to in order to achieve their goals? From its striking opening to its poignant conclusion, Sand is a white-knuckled ride through the landscape of the human psyche about our instinct for survival and our capacity for deception.
Sand boasts an impressive local cast. Appearing alongside David Ward onstage will be experienced actors Brad Beales, Greg Shawcross and Tony Wasley.
