Seraphine de Senlis was a religious, solitary and eccentric character who worked as a maid in the town of Senlis. Maid by day, artist by night. When art collector Wilhem Uhde arrives in Senlis, Seraphine cleans his floors, washes his linen and prepares his tea. And then he accidentally stumbles on her work and immediately recognises her talent.

This portrait of an artist has been meticulously and beautifully brought to life. It’s also a record of the impact of the times on her work - World War I which forced Uhde to flee to Germany, and later the Depression which had a major impact on her growing success.

At the centre of the film is a wonderful performance by Yolande Moreau: she lives and breathes her character as this woman who walks a fine line between talent and mental instability.
