2010 Fracture Gallery Program, Federation Square

RMIT Gallery 2010

?Very Slow Drawing Machine is the first installation in Federation Square's 2010 Fracture Gallery program, curated by RMIT Gallery.

Transforming the space into an art laboratory, Robbins' self-built machine, harnesses the wind and solar power, to produce a series of delicate and rhythmic drawings, 'transcribing' the dynamics of Melbourne's weather.

Two felt tipped pens dance, jump and glide across the surface of a slowly turning giant cylinder, tethered by a wire to keep them on track. The marks made are either slow and delicate or fast and furious, depending on Melbourne's prevailing weather conditions.

Powered by a solar panel and large sail outside The Atrium, the Very Slow Drawing Machine will complete one full rotation in a week, and will take up to 20 days to fill a 10 metre strip of paper. The slow rotational pace of the machine will be juxtaposed against the chaotic rhythms of the weather.
