College student Julia wakes one morning bruised and bloodied, lying next to her boyfriend who has been stabbed to death, and his male lover, Ramiro, who’s barely alive. Julia calls the police, but cannot remember what happened, and is quickly arrested on suspicion of murder. To complicate matters she discovers she’s pregnant, and is placed in a special section of the prison for inmates with small children.

Initially desolate, and unhappy to be pregnant, Julia gradually adjusts to her situation. She gives birth to a son, Tomás, finds solace in her neighbour, Marta, and the two women soon become lovers. However, as her trial nears, external forces bear down upon Julia: her estranged mother wants custody of Tomás, and Ramiro, who also cannot remember the details of the fateful night, will lie to save his skin. Julia must also face the impending legal requirement that children can only stay with their mothers in prison for the first four years of their life. It will take the strength of a lioness to survive in this hostile world.

With a remarkable performance by Martina Gusman as Julia, Lion’s Den is a gripping, tense and claustrophobic drama that has swept awards around the world since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. (PT)
