Frederick McCubbin is one of the foremost Australian Impressionists, most well known for his images of the bush. McCubbin: Last Impressions 1907–17 traces the radical changes in McCubbin’s work in the early 20th century after he viewed the works of the European masters JMW Turner and Claude Monet. It shows how McCubbin developed a free and expressive art and reveals how he conveyed the varying effects of light – sparkling, flickering and hazed light – through his striking use of bright glowing colours. The exhibition includes a diverse range of joyous Australian paintings, from the bush to the docks and city life, interiors and portraits, as well as his engaging and intimate impressions.
