CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA & PAGLIACCI
Presented by West Australian Opera

CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA by Pietro Mascagni
PAGLIACCI by Ruggiero Leoncavallo

Conducted by Sebastian Lang-Lessing
Directed by Andrew Sinclair
Assistant Direction by Margrete Helgeby
Costume Design by Victoria Rowell
Set Design by Shaun Gurton
Lighting Design by Donn Byrnes

These operas are uno squarcio di vita – a slice of life, exploring the raw passions of village communities in provincial Italy. They did not begin life as a double bill – that happened in 1893 at the Met and also in Australia. They were composed separately: Cavalleria first, given in 1890 and Pagliacci second, given in 1892 under Toscanini’s direction. But the fact that they had the same publishers, Sonzogno, probably had something to do with what has become undoubtedly one of the most popular and profitable couplings in opera.

The works have had a long history in Australia. Three years after its première, Cavalleria was being received with enthusiasm in Sydney and Melbourne and Pagliacci has always been a favourite with our audiences since 1893, eighteen months after its première, with Fiorello Giraud – the first Canio in the cast in that occasion.

The plot of Pagliacci was, according to Leoncavallo, based on a murder case in Calabria in 1865 at which his father was a presiding magistrate. The grim poetry of these pieces has been captured perfectly in the film noir ascetic of the productions that Andrew Sinclair has done for us.

These operas give us the opportunity to welcome back Stuart Skelton – now truly a citizen of the world’s stages – to the company. It is also a real pleasure to have Sarah Dougiamas making a role debut as Santuzza and to have the veteran mezzo soprano Jolanta Nagajek make a cameo as Mamma Lucia. Jolanta is very much a part of the history of opera in Australia and has done so much for our company in helping young singers – she is a treasure.

We welcome the chief conductor of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Sebastian Lang-Lessing, for a company debut and welcome back tenor Angus Wood. Company artists James Clayton, Elisa Wilson, Roberto Abate and Luke Gabbedy will also feature in this hot-blooded double bill.
