COMPANY B BELVOIR PRESENTS

THE END

WRITTEN BY: SAMUEL BECKETT

DIRECTED BY: EAMON FLACK

BELVOIR ST DOWNSTAIRS THEATRE

15 APRIL – 9 MAY 2010

WITH: ROBERT MENZIES

LIGHTING DESIGNER: TEEGAN LEE

I knew it would soon be the end, so I played the part, you know, the part of –

how shall I say, I don't know.

Robert Menzies by Jeff Busby.JPGBelvoir St Downstairs Theatre will play host to a Company B Belvoir jewel this autumn – a special production of Samuel Beckett’s extraordinary story The End. Director Eamon Flack makes his Company B Belvoir debut, offering a rare opportunity to see Robert Menzies perform his magic in the intimate eighty-seat theatre.

Beckett’s short story will be performed by Menzies as a monologue. On a bare stage, he’ll play a lonely soul who is ejected from the comfort of an asylum and spends his days wandering and waiting for some kind of conclusion to his existence. His life has failed, he’s beyond loneliness and destitution, he ekes out the final small pleasures of living until there is nothing left but to drift away.

Director, Eamon Flack said, ‘Beckett’s particular magic is to show us the special beauty and humour of full blown existential sadness. The End is a concentrated display of that magic. He rakes through the ashes of a totally ruined life in search of a spark of glory, and finds it.’

Eamon Flack is the Artistic Associate of Company B Belvoir. He has also worked as an actor, director, writer and dramaturg for Company B Belvoir, STC, Bell Shakespeare’s Mind’s Eye, thinice, Perth International Arts Festival, Griffin Stablemates, PlayWriting Australia, the Ensemble Theatre, ArtRage, deckchair, the Old Fitz and Darlinghurst Theatre. He founded Bob Presents, a loose collective of theatre-makers. In 2009 he adapted and directed Gorky’s Summerfolk for Bob Presents; A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Bob Presents, Arts Radar and B Sharp and his adaptation of Sophocles’ Antigone was directed by Matthew Lutton for ThinIce and the Perth International Arts Festival. Most recently he was Assistant Director to Neil Armfield for Company B Belvoir’s 2009 production of The Book of Everything and was special guest at the Alberta Theatre Projects’ Enbridge PlayRites Festival in Calgary, Canada. He has work in development with the Darwin Festival and his adaptation of Antigone will be published by Currency Press in May this year.

Robert Menzies has performed in an impressive list of theatre productions for all the major theatre companies in Australia, including Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, State Theatre Company of South Australia, Queensland Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, and of course Company B Belvoir, with his performances in Paul (2007) and The Threepenny Opera (2003). Other memorable performances include The War of the Roses (Sydney Theatre Company); The Journal of the Plague Year (Malthouse Theatre); Julius Caesar (Sydney Theatre Company), and the double-billing Reunion/A Kind of Alaska directed by Andrew Upton/Cate Blanchett (Sydney Theatre Company). He has been nominated for two Green Room Awards, three Helpmann Awards and an AFI Award for his role in the feature film, Three Dollars. He will continue his close collaboration with Benedict Andrews in Company B Belvoir’s Measure for Measure in June this year.
