By Vanessa Bates

Directed by Shannon Murphy

Bill (Mr. Sex on a Stick): When did things become so Nigella?

Griffin Theatre Company Resident Playwright Vanessa Bates’ newest play, Porn.Cake, premiered in Melbourne in 2011 with much hilarity. Come 20 June, her deliciously funny exploration of love and sex in the modern world will open at the SBW Stables Theatre, only this time award-winning Director, Shannon Murphy (Crestfall, This Year’s Ashes) is plating up.
Ant and Annie are a couple. So are Bill and Bella, and all are teetering frighteningly close to middle age. Over cake, nothing is said but the meaning so biting it’s not just cake you can slice a knife through. Porn.Cake is a decadent, bowl-licking comedy about love the contemporary way: communication disrupted via text, indulgence disturbed by allergies and happiness peppered with rage.

Director Shannon Murphy says, “Jamie, Nigella, Heston and Gordon. When did we stop watching porn and start watching cooking shows? This new Australian play by the brave and hilarious Vanessa Bates explores what it is to feel that perhaps the best years of your life have already happened when you weren’t paying attention.”

The cast (who will consume many, many slices of cake throughout the season) comprises Josef Ber (Tricky Business, Rush, East West 101), Glenn Hazeldine (Elling, TotMom, As You Like It (Bell Shakespeare)), Olivia Pigeot (Death of a Salesman (Ensemble), Home and Away, Tomorrow When the War Began) and Georgina Symes (Crestfall, Uta Uber Cool Ja, Rake).

Vanessa Bates is one of the country’s most daring and witty young playwrights. Her previous plays include Checklist For An Armed Robber, Hunger, Match, Darling Oscar, The Night We Lost Jenny, Confetti, Homemade, At Sea and Petunia Takes Tea. She published her first novel, Legs up and Laughing: A True Story of What It Takes to Make a Family, in 2007.

Funny, disturbing and utterly in tune with the zeitgeist, Porn.Cake is a bold step forward in contemporary theatre. ****1/2 – The Age

Porn.Cake is a savage comedy about the desolation of two middle-class childless couples, who at around the mid-40 mark find themselves inexplicably unhappy. – Theatrenotes
