THE SOUL MATES feat. MAHALIA BARNES
SERVING SOUL AT THE SANDO EVERY TUESDAY NIGHT !!!

Come and see The Soul Mates and Mahalia Barnes play live - we guarantee they’ll blow you away!

After more than 4 years playing soul music in Sydney’s inner-city nightclubs, The Soul Mates feat. Mahalia Barnes are bringing their unique soul ‘n’ blues performances to The Sandringham Hotel in Newtown.

“Basically it’s soul music — soul music with a lot of blues and some Southern rock & roll” says Mahalia, who confides that their influences range from the classic soul divas like Aretha Franklin to the bluesy rock of the Black Crowes and the neo-soul of Jill Scott and D’Angelo.

Being the daughter of one of Australia’s rock & roll legends has, she says, “created a lot of expectations about what type of person I am. But I can’t complain. I’ve been exposed to the most amazing music.”

Four or five years ago, Mahalia struck out on her own playing shows at various Sydney clubs. Many of those shows were collaborations with friends like Juanita Tippins and Jade MacRae and the Doley Brothers band, The Hands.

Mahalia and The Soul Mates also scored the highly coveted support slot for The Roots national tour which was undoubtedly a tour to remember!

During 2008, The Soul Mates line-up became more permanent with the inclusion of musicians Ben Rodgers, Rob Woolf, Dave Hibbard and Jon Pease, along with singers Darren Percival and Juanita Tippins.

“We still like to mix it up a bit though” says Mahalia. “Occasionally we’ll use a horn section, different singers and guest musicians. That way the show stays fresh for us and for the audience.”
