Mendelssohn - Overture, Scherzo and Wedding March from Midsummer Night's Drem Op.61

Dvorak - The Spectre's Bride

Escape into an exciting world of imagery and fantasy with the talented Stephen Mould conducting the combined forces of the Choir and Orchestra in an audience delighting program of Mendelssohn’s Overture, Scherzo and Wedding March from Midsummer Night’s Dream and Dvorak’s The Spectre’s Bride.

The selections for Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream are the best known of the pieces that he wrote as incidental music for Shakespeare’s play in 1842. It is one of the most played wedding marches at weddings in many English-speaking countries and is one of the most loved classical works in the repertoire.

Be enchanted by a classically twisted fairytale told through the cleverly constructed music of Dvorak. The Spectre’s Bride derives from a folk ballad about a maiden who is led by her boyfriend's ghost on a tormented journey that nearly leads to her own grave. This exciting Oratorio employs the idioms and melodies of the folk music of Dvorak’s native Bohemia and Moravia and exhibits the composer’s
beautifully crafted music.

A passionate night of romanticism and imagination!

Conductor:
Stephen Mould
