2012 Sydney Shakespeare Festival:
Hamlet and The Taming of the Shrew… under the stars

Pack a picnic, grab your friends and celebrate summer with a night of theatrical magic on Sydney’s fabulous harbour foreshore! Free for kids!

Proudly supported by the City of Sydney, the 2012 Sydney Shakespeare Festival returns in January with Shakespeare’s tragic masterpiece, Hamlet and his boisterous battle of the sexes, The Taming of the Shrew. With each play performed on alternate nights, and shows FREE for anyone 12 and under or 65 and over – as well as to people with disabilities - the festival takes place in Bicentennial Park, Glebe Foreshore Thursday to Sunday at 8pm from 5 January until 12 February 2012.

Shakespeare’s plays have captured the imagination of millions of people throughout the world for over 400 years. They are as exciting and provocative now as the day they were written, according to Julie Baz, Artistic Director and co-founder of the festival.

“The multiple themes of indecision, revenge and retribution, deception, ambition, loyalty and fate ensure have made Hamlet a timeless favourite. And The Taming of the Shrew - with its slapstick farce and hilarious battle of the sexes - is a really great night of theatre with something for everyone.”

Now in its fifth year, the annual Sydney Shakespeare Festival is one of Sydney’s summer event highlights. Audiences can bring a picnic, enjoy a glass of wine and experience the wonder of Shakespeare under the stars, all while taking in spectacular views of Sydney Harbour, the city skyline and surrounding urban parkland.

Directed by Julie Baz and designed by David Jeffrey, the festival is brought to life by a talented and versatile cast who feature in both plays: John Burdon, Emily Elise, Christina Falsone, Richard Hilliar, David Jeffrey, Lana Kershaw, Cherilyn Price, Roger Adam Smith, Jacob Thomas & Nicole Wineberg.
