THE NEW ELECTRIC BALLROOM

By Enda Walsh

Directed by Kate Gaul

A work by one of the most electric and imaginative voices of contemporary theatre and film, Enda Walsh, opens the 2012 Griffin Independent Season. In a Sydney premiere, and just in time for St Patrick’s Day, the Irish-born Walsh’s Edinburgh Fringe Award-winning The New Electric Ballroom opens at the SBW Stables Theatre on March 10.

In a dark and isolated Irish fishing village three sisters are haunted by days past, when anything was possible. The two eldest, Clara and Breda, both splattered in makeup like teenagers, reenact a heartbreaking night at the local dance, The New Electric Ballroom. Ada, the baby of the trio at 40, is their loyal assistant and audience. Together the three sisters share tightly gripping family bonds, heavy-sitting memories and a hopeful glimmer of escape. Enter Patsy, a lonely gossip and fishmonger who is searching desperately for a higher purpose beyond delivering seafood…

Enda Walsh has a vast reputation for bold storytelling, lyrical writing, thought-provoking honesty and the darkest of dark humour. His 2008 biopic, Hunger, won the Camera d’Or at Cannes Film Festival. In 2007, his comedy The Walworth Farce – a companion piece to The New Electric Ballroom – also won the Fringe First Award at Edinburgh (he received the award two years in a row with the two plays).

Director, Kate Gaul, is one of the independent theatre industry’s heavyweights having produced work at many major theatres, including Company B, Ensemble, Sydney Theatre and Melbourne Theatre Company. Recent shows include As You Like It and The Seagull for Siren Theatre Co, Beautiful for Mudlark Theatre (Tasmania) and The Cunning Little Vixen for Sydney Chamber Opera. Of The New Electric Ballroom, Kate says, “It is thrilling to finally be directing this play by the prodigiously imaginative Enda Walsh. The kaleidoscopic language, the rugged emotional terrain, the incredible, wild humour, as well as the theatrical demands of this play make it a rich challenge for director and actors. There’s a golden thread that runs through all of Irish drama, from Synge through Becket to Walsh, which glows with a glorious vitality and forensic intensity about what it is to be human.”

The Griffin Independent season launches with a tight and talented cast comprising Odile Le Clezio (All Saints, Home and Away, Angels in America), Genevieve Mooy (Small Poppies, Queen C, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg), Jane Phegan (As You Like It, A Distressing Scenario, The Table of Knowledge) and Justin Smith (Rent, Billy Eliot, The Wonderful World of Dissocia, Bastard Boys).

The New Electric Ballroom season runs 10 to 31 March. Tickets are on sale now as part of a Griffin Subscription or on their own.

I’m interested in very small, claustrophobic situations and the effects that the outside world has on them. – Enda Walsh
