Robert Dowling: Tasmanian son of Empire

Finished
This event has now passed
An important colonial artist, Robert Dowling was the first artist to be trained in Australia and holds a special place in the history and development of Australian art. This is the first major exhibition of his work bringing together paintings and watercolours from Australian public and private collections as well as works from the British Museum, London. The exhibition spans Dowling’s career in which he produced not only portraits of pastoralists, their families and properties but also, significantly, group images of the Tasmanian and Victorian Indigenous people, popular genre subjects, historical and biblical themes and the most substantial Orientalist images by any Australian artist at the time.

This exhibition is supported by the National Gallery of Australia Council Exhibitions Fund. The exhibition is also supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians and Visions of Australia, an Australian Government Program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of cultural material across Australia.
